How To Eliminate Nail Fungus With Ingredients Found At Home

nail fungus

Nail fungus is an infection caused by a variety of factors. Although it’s no substitute for professional treatment, some home remedies can help combat it.

Nail fungus is medically known as onychomycosis. These are infections caused by various types of fungi, primarily dermatophytes, yeasts, and molds. These infections usually develop in warm, humid environments and are more common in people who wear closed shoes for long periods, suffer excessive sweating, or have suffered trauma to their nails, explains Isabel Palacios, podiatrist and pharmaceutical chemist.

Other factors that influence the appearance of fungi are age, a weakened immune system, and diseases such as diabetes.

“In addition to the aesthetic effect, which can be very noticeable, fungus can cause thickening of the nail, color changes (yellow, brown, or white), brittleness, a bad odor, and even pain, especially as the infection progresses. In more severe cases, it can affect the nail structure to the point of making it difficult to walk or wear shoes,” explains Alma Irene Mejía, a chiropodist.

Toenail fungus is easy to identify. Some common signs include, in addition to color changes and thickening, a brittle or rough texture, or partial detachment from the nail bed, the skin beneath the nail. Sometimes, there may be a foul odor or debris buildup beneath the nail. However, for an accurate diagnosis, it’s best to consult a professional.

While there are popular home remedies such as white vinegar, garlic, or tea tree oil, it’s important to mention that the effectiveness of these products can vary, and they are not a substitute for professional treatment, explains Mejía.

Ways to eliminate nail fungus

White vinegar, which everyone probably has at home, can be used as a home remedy to whiten nails or remove yellow stains. Applying it to the nail can reduce this problem if combined with a professionally supervised treatment.

Garlic is also used as a home remedy to strengthen and repair nails, as it contains antifungal and restorative properties. It’s a good way to prevent the appearance of nail fungus. However, it’s not a substitute for treatment prescribed by a specialist.

Tea tree oil is a natural remedy commonly used as an antiseptic and an ally to combat fungal infections.

Home remedies for this problem can help in the very early stages or can complement professionally supervised treatments. However, to treat advanced infections, topical or even oral antifungal treatment is required, under medical supervision.

“It’s best to avoid self-medication and seek specialized care,” the specialist adds.
