Sunscreen and moisturizer are two essential products in any facial routine, and even more so now that it’s summer and is set to experience much higher temperatures compared to previous years. However, many people are unaware of a basic principle in cosmetics: “the order in which you apply skincare products matters .” Applying skincare products in the correct order can help maximize results and ensure you get the full benefits of each formula. Moisturizer and sunscreen also have a proper application schedule that should be followed.
The first thing to remember are the basic steps of a good facial routine. Just as there are red lines, we also have to keep in mind that there are three fundamental pillars of any beauty routine: cleansing, moisturizing, and protection. By following these three steps and applying the products in the correct order and, very importantly, at the right time of day, we will achieve optimal results. Before continuing with the tips for a good facial routine, the most important thing is to identify our skin type and thus use the appropriate cosmetics.
Should sunscreen be applied before or after cream?
After reviewing the “must-haves” for a daily facial routine, the question remains: which goes first: moisturizer or sunscreen? The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using sunscreen daily . “Sunscreen is one of the most important things you can do for your skin. When applied correctly, sunscreen protects your skin against the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays , which cause sunburn, skin cancer, and premature skin aging, such as wrinkles and age spots,” they explain.
One solution to simplify a daily routine is to use a facial moisturizer with a broad-spectrum SPF of 30 or higher. However, if you have different products, the correct order is as follows.
- Hydration : The cream chosen to moisturize the skin daily should be the first one used.
- Sun protection : Even if your makeup includes sunscreen, it’s still necessary to apply sunscreen after moisturizing. The SPF will be determined by your skin type.
- Makeup : Once your skin has absorbed the sunscreen, you can begin applying your usual makeup. If your sunscreen includes a tinted tint, foundation may not be necessary.
And, don’t forget to let your skin dry before moisturizing it and between steps of your routine.
