Black Spots Appear on Your Hands? This Could Be the Cause

Black Spots

Hands are the part of the body that is most often exposed to sunlight. It is not surprising that as people age, many people begin to notice the appearance of dark spots in this area.

Dark spots themselves are a common condition that is usually not dangerous, but can be disturbing in appearance. This condition can appear due to sun exposure and other things, including the following:

1. Excessive Sun Exposure

Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun is the most common cause of dark spots, especially on areas of the body that are often exposed, such as the hands. UV rays stimulate the production of melanin, the skin’s natural pigment.

Excessive or uneven melanin production is what can cause dark spots to appear. These spots usually begin to appear after years of unprotected sun exposure.

2. Skin Aging

As we age, the skin’s regeneration process slows down and pigment distribution is not as efficient as when we were younger. The combination of age and accumulated sun exposure over the years causes dark spots to appear more frequently on the hands of adults, especially those over the age of 40.

3. Hormonal Changes

Hormonal changes, such as those that occur during pregnancy or when taking birth control pills, can trigger hyperpigmentation. This condition is called melasma.

Well, melasma itself usually appears on the face, but it is still possible for it to appear on the hands. The risk of its appearance can be even higher if triggered by sun exposure.

4. Scars or Irritation

Scars, scratches, or skin irritations from chemicals or allergies can leave dark spots after they heal. This is known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). If your hands frequently come into contact with harsh substances such as detergents or alcohol, the risk of irritation and spots can increase.

5. Use of Certain Cosmetic Products or Medicines

Some cosmetic or skincare products contain active ingredients that can increase sensitivity to sunlight (photosensitivity). Certain medications, such as antibiotics or anti-inflammatory drugs, can also cause similar reactions and trigger the appearance of dark spots if the skin is exposed to UV rays during use.

Although dark spots are not dangerous, there is nothing wrong with preventing their appearance so that they do not end up interfering with your appearance. The main way to prevent this is to use sunscreen. Don’t forget to always maintain your health and skin care, okay!
