Tooth loss or toothlessness can occur from the late 30s to the early 40s. The cause is negligence in maintaining dental hygiene, poor oral hygiene habits, or having a genetic predisposition to conditions such as periodontal disease.
According to an associate consultant at the Department of Restorative Dentistry, Prosthodontics Unit, National Dental Centre Singapore, Dr. Kong Rui Ling, said that even with good dental care, adults can lose five to 10 teeth by the time they reach their late 60s or early 70s.
“And you need to retain at least 20 natural teeth to chew effectively,” Dr. Kong said.
Reporting from Antara, Dr. Kong recommends the following ways to increase the chances of maintaining white teeth in old age.
1. Protect teeth from the effects of grinding
Those who regularly grind their teeth, especially at night, should consult a doctor about using a special mouthguard.
2. Arrange your meals for better dental health
A diet to strengthen teeth includes foods rich in calcium, Vitamin D, and phosphorus but low in sugar and acid.
3. Don’t abuse your teeth
Do not use your teeth to open packages and bottles, or bite on hard objects such as pens and hard candy.
4. Avoid cigarettes or tobacco products
Smoking and using tobacco products can cause gum disease, bad breath, and oral cancer, so they are best avoided.
5. Stay hydrated
Saliva plays an important role in maintaining oral health, as it neutralizes acids and cleans away food particles. So, it is a good idea to drink plenty of water throughout the day to prevent dry mouth.
6. Be careful when taking medication
Some medications, such as antihistamines, antidepressants, and pain relievers, can cause dry mouth, which can lead to cavities and gum disease over time. Therefore, it is best to consult a doctor to address the effects of using medications that cause dry mouth.
7. Perform regular self-checks
Check your teeth for signs of problems such as receding gums, bleeding gums, or unusually sensitive teeth. You should see a dentist immediately if you feel pain or experience swelling and other problems.
