How Often Should You Change Your Toothbrush? This Is What Profeco Says.

Changing your toothbrush on time is key to oral health. Profeco explains which models stand out and when to replace them.

Taking care of your oral health starts with a basic tool: the toothbrush. Although it may seem like a simple object, its quality, durability, and design can make a difference in your daily cleaning routine.

The Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco) recently analyzed several brands to determine which ones meet quality standards, and the results offer clear guidance for consumers.

In its most recent Consumer Magazine, Profeco published a study in which it evaluated different models of toothbrushes

All products tested passed the strength tests, both in terms of bristle attachment to the brush head and handle flex, and also tolerated scrubbing without deterioration.

Experts recommend carefully reviewing the features of each toothbrush before purchasing, as is the case with complementary products such as mouthwash. A comparison of prices and benefits will help you choose the most suitable one for each person.

When to change your toothbrush

According to dentists and manufacturers, it’s ideal to replace your toothbrush every three months, or sooner if the bristles show wear. This ensures effective cleaning and prevents bacterial buildup.

However, before throwing them away, Profeco suggests giving them a second use at home. A worn brush can be used to clean hard-to-reach spaces, such as tile grout, the corners of appliances, small pieces of jewelry, or even the bicycle chain.

When the bristles are completely damaged, it is time to dispose of them in the appropriate containers.

Key recommendations for using your brush

Proper toothbrush use also influences oral health. Here are some basic recommendations:

  • Consult your dentist: a specialist can advise you on the type of toothbrush that best suits your needs.
  • Renew every 3 months: change it regularly to maintain its effectiveness.
  • Proper brushing after every meal: Use a proper technique that removes debris without damaging your gums.
  • Drying in an upright position: Rinse the brush well and place it upright to prevent the growth of bacteria.
  • Personal use: Never share your toothbrush, as this could lead to the spread of disease.

Choosing a toothbrush shouldn’t be taken lightly. Choosing a quality product, using it correctly, and replacing it frequently contribute to better oral health and safer hygiene.
