The FDA has issued an urgent recall alert for “Golden Crop Candy,” a candy manufactured in China, due to the presence of banned toxic food colorings.
The FDA has issued a nationwide recall of “Golden Crop Candy,” manufactured in China and imported by Blooming Import Inc., after detecting the coloring Acid Red 18, a substance banned in foods due to its possible carcinogenic effects.
The colorant Acid Red 18, used in plastics and wood but illegal in food products, poses a serious threat to public health. Furthermore, the FDA identified the presence of Blue 1 and Red 40 in the candy, synthetic colorants that were not declared on the label, thus violating labeling regulations.
” Acid Red 18 is associated with toxic effects and a potential risk of tumors. Its intake is completely contraindicated,” the agency’s official statement said.
The affected candies were distributed in New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Missouri, Delaware, and Texas. They are identified by product codes 73476513450 and 734765134587, corresponding to 74 boxes in total. Although the exact number of units per box has not been specified, the FDA urges consumers and retailers to immediately stop consuming or selling them.
The recall is classified as Class II, indicating that the product could cause temporary or reversible adverse health effects. However, given the risk, the agency recommends avoiding consumption and contacting the FDA if you have purchased the product.
In parallel, the FDA has begun the process of banning the food coloring Red 3, which will be eliminated from food by 2027 and from drugs by 2028. At the state level, California and West Virginia have implemented laws restricting the use of these additives, while 30 other states are considering similar measures.
Recent studies link synthetic dyes to a variety of health problems, including tumors, hyperactivity in children, and metabolic disorders. According to experts, compounds such as Acid Red 18, derived from the petrochemical industry, can bioaccumulate in the body and disrupt fundamental cellular processes.
