Coconut oil is a natural product that has become very popular in the beauty routine of many women; however, applying it to the face can cause acne and other dermatological problems.
A skin care specialist warned on HealthyWay.com that coconut oil is one of the natural oils with the highest comedogenic rating. “This means that coconut oil cannot be absorbed by the skin or penetrate the pores, so it will remain on the surface, clogging pores and suffocating the skin,” said Paul Dean.
Coconut oil is often used as a makeup remover because, while it can remove waterproof cosmetics, it doesn’t completely cleanse the skin. “Rather, the remaining dirt, dead skin cells, and makeup become trapped in the oil and adhere to the face,” Dean explained.
Why shouldn’t you use coconut oil on your face?
Acne, redness, small breakouts, allergies, itching, and inflammation. Experts say it can be worse for people with oily skin, as it creates an ideal environment for the growth of bacteria and fungi.
For his part, Joshua Zeichner, director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, also explained to Cosmopolitan magazine that using coconut oil as a makeup remover can clog pores.
Coconut oil acts as a plug in the pores of the face, which can damage skin that is especially prone to acne.
What type of oil can be used on the face?
The dermatologist indicated that the most recommended ones are those with a low comedogenic index, such as argan, shea, castor, rosehip, or almond oil.
