Knowing the warning signs is the first step toward active prevention. Paying attention to changes in your body and performing regular self-exams can make a difference. Below are nine common symptoms you shouldn’t ignore.
A lump in the breast or armpit
This is the most common symptom. A lump or mass, even if painless and small, can be the first sign. It’s crucial to regularly palpate the breast and armpit to identify any new lumps that weren’t there before.
Changes in the size or shape of the breast
Noticing unusual asymmetry or a noticeable change in the shape or size of one of your breasts can be a red flag. This may include a breast that looks or feels swollen, larger, or has a different shape than usual.
Inverted nipple or inverted nipple
If your nipple turns inward or changes position, it’s important to have it checked. A nipple that suddenly becomes inverted or indented is a symptom that may be associated with breast cancer and requires medical attention.
Nipple discharge

Dimpled or folded skin

Persistent rash or irritation
