Constant Fatigue: When Tiredness Can Be A Sign Of A Hidden Health Problem

Persistent fatigue can affect your productivity and health. Discover why being constantly tired isn’t always resolved by getting more sleep.

Feeling exhausted all day, even after getting enough sleep, could indicate more than just a lack of rest. Persistent fatigue, which affects millions of people worldwide, isn’t always explained by a poor night’s sleep alone.

According to specialists at Houston Methodist Hospital, such as neurologist Aarthi Ram, this extreme fatigue could be a warning sign of underlying health problems or undiagnosed sleep disorders.

Frequent daytime fatigue not only compromises productivity at work or at home, but also increases the risk of accidents, especially when driving or operating machinery.

Although the most common cause of fatigue remains inadequate rest, many cases persist even after adopting good sleep habits.

Is it fatigue or just accumulated sleep?

Although they’re often confused, “feeling tired” is not the same as “being sleepy.” The former refers to a feeling of physical or mental exhaustion, while the latter is a physiological need for sleep. “If after sleeping seven to nine hours you still feel exhausted, you’re probably dealing with fatigue,” says Dr. Ram.

Sleeping too little or having an interrupted sleep can cause the body to accumulate sleep, but fatigue persists even after sleep, affecting energy and the ability to concentrate.
