Scientific studies on oregano attribute significant therapeutic properties to this plant, especially to one of its components, oregano essential oil, widely used in aromatherapy. This popular aromatic herb can be a valuable addition to any home medicine cabinet, as it can be an effective and healing home remedy. However, it should be used with caution, as it is very potent and has contraindications and potential risks.
Oregano oil eliminates bacteria, fungi, parasites, and viruses, even with just a few drops. Furthermore, it does not cause side effects or promote mutations that lead to resistant pathogenic strains, as can happen with pharmaceutical antibiotics.
Properties of oregano oil
Oregano oil is one of the most potent and effective natural antiseptic remedies.
The active ingredient that gives it these properties is carvacrol, a phenol found in the plant in concentrations ranging from 30 to 87 percent.
A high percentage of carvacrol obtained by distillation does not imply greater therapeutic effectiveness, since the effectiveness of oregano oil comes from the delicate synergy created by nature and in which other components of oregano are involved.
It is attributed with fungicidal, antibiotic, antioxidant, and immune system-stimulating properties.
What is oregano oil used for?
Due to its fungicidal and antibiotic properties, its antioxidant power, and its immunostimulating action, oregano oil is a powerful remedy in the medicine cabinet with multiple benefits and can be useful in any of these uses:
1. Due to its antibiotic action
Carvacrol, the most potent active ingredient in oregano essential oil, is effective against the dangerous methicillin-resistant bacteria (known as MRSA).
It also stimulates the immune system, making it ideal for overcoming colds, flu, and herpes.
2. For the skin: on warts, wounds, and infections
A simple foot bath is effective in treating infection with the common athlete’s foot fungus (Tinea pedis), according to research from the University of Tokyo (Japan).
Its topical application also allows for the removal of warts and prevents blisters from forming. Furthermore, it has an anesthetic effect and accelerates wound healing.
3. For Candida
Oregano is considered one of the best antimicrobial plants to combat candidiasis.
In a test tube, oregano oil was able to eliminate the fungus Candida glabrata, resistant to treatment with fluconazole, according to research conducted at the Federal University of Santa Maria (Brazil).
4. As an anti-cancer agent
Carvacrol, found in oregano oil, is an antioxidant with anticancer effects, particularly against colon cancer. Its use as a therapeutic agent is even being studied at Harbin University in China.
5. For pain and inflammation
Several studies have proven oregano oil’s ability to relieve pain from bruises, sprains, tendonitis, and arthritis. It also has an anti-inflammatory effect and is especially beneficial for gum inflammation.
6. To improve mood
Oregano increases the activity of dopamine and serotonin. Both neurotransmitters are linked to a positive mood. A deficiency in these neurotransmitters can cause depression.
How to take or apply oregano oil?
Oregano oil is sold mixed with extra virgin olive oil in the amount of 40% oregano and 60% olive oil.
This combination is necessary because oregano oil is too strong to consume orally and can cause skin burns if applied topically.
How much oregano oil can you take?
The recommended dose of oregano oil varies depending on the condition, and if in doubt, it’s always best to consult a specialist. Furthermore, as mentioned in the previous section, it must be properly diluted.
One to three drops, three times a day, is enough to prevent infections, stay free of parasites, and maintain good health.
At the first sign of a viral attack, take 3 to 6 drops every hour for 10 hours and then lower the dose to the maintenance dose.
How is it applied to the skin?
Again, it is important to take the necessary precautions to avoid skin burns when applying oregano oil, diluting it appropriately as explained above in the section “How to take or apply oregano oil”.
In the case of herpes, in addition to taking diluted oregano oil, it is recommended to apply it directly to the affected area two or three times a day.
The warts will be treated with a soaked piece of cotton, which should be left stuck to the wart for as long as possible, secured with adhesive tape.
Dangers of oregano oil
It’s important to know that when any pathogen is eliminated from the body, toxins in the bloodstream increase, causing fatigue, skin irritations, and other symptoms. This is a sign that the body is detoxifying.
If the symptoms mentioned are very bothersome, it’s advisable to reduce your consumption of oregano oil, drink water, and, once the symptoms have subsided, gradually increase the dosage again. Drinking 8 to 12 glasses of mineral water daily helps to eliminate them more quickly.
Regarding its local application, people with sensitive skin should dilute one drop of oregano oil, even if it comes pre-diluted, in 3 to 5 drops of chia, almond, or olive oil to further reduce its possible irritating effect.
