Types Of Hair Removal And The Care They Require

As a cosmetic practice and, in some ways, also considered hygienic, some people remove their hair. There are different ways and each one requires skin care.

Hair removal is a cosmetic practice that involves removing hair from certain areas of the human body (face, armpits, legs, and pubis, among others), and although it is something natural, it has been part of beauty standards for several decades.

Although it has been done for many years, it is becoming more and more common nowadays and those who do it must remember that it is necessary to take into account certain measures to care for their skin, before, during, and after doing it.

There are different ways to remove unwanted hair, which is considered unsightly, and each one requires specific care. Here are some tips:

  • Wax

This is a well-known, but somewhat painful, technique. It involves applying hot wax, with the help of a spatula, to the area where the hair is to be removed. With this technique, hair growth is slower and grows finer.

How does it work? Since it is wax, the heat causes the pores to open and facilitate the removal of hair. After applying it with a spatula, wait for it to dry and, with one pull, pull out the hair with the help of a blanket.

But this, like the other techniques, requires care. Just like with the razor, when waxing, it is important to exfoliate the day before. A few hours before doing so, it is recommended to apply a water-based, non-greasy cream to make the procedure easier.

After waxing, you should apply products such as aloe vera, which calms and reduces inflammation in the areas irritated by pulling. According to Lucía Pérez, from Glam Studio, it is advisable to apply products containing chamomile to reduce inflammation and treat skin sensitivity.

It is important to avoid sun exposure, at least for two days afterward.

  • Laser

This is a technique that has become increasingly popular, because, in addition to obtaining optimal results (very slow growth and the appearance of very fine hair), the procedure is not painful, except for a few exceptions who suffer from minimal irritation. In addition, it is not recommended for people with tattoos.

However, this must be done by experts, as it involves the use of machines through which the staff applies a very intense light to the area where the hair is to be removed.

This light passes through the skin without damaging it (if applied by a qualified person) and concentrates its energy on the hair, almost completely removing it from the root. This light seeks out dark areas, concentrated in melanin, which is why, in the case of lighter hair, it is somewhat difficult. The light and its exposure time must be adapted according to the type of hair.

As with the previous procedure, it is recommended to avoid sun exposure to prevent skin damage caused by radiation. In addition, according to Pérez, exposure to high-temperature environments causes irritation or skin reactions, and he adds that it is advisable to get laser hair removal at least two weeks before exposure to heat.

  • Honey

This is a method very similar to waxing, as it involves applying warm honey to the area where you want to remove the hair. In the same way, after removing the hair, it slowly reappears and becomes thinner.

According to Pérez, it is not advisable for women over 30 to frequently undergo this type of facial hair removal, as the skin is very sensitive, has lost flexibility, and causes the eyelid to droop due to the pulling of the fabric.

One place where natural honey is used is the Rebecana Spa, where they usually apply anesthesia for the pain and creams for care, before and after waxing.

It is advisable to apply exfoliant beforehand as part of skin cleansing and to facilitate the removal of unwanted hair.

Likewise, to reduce pain, some products contain analgesics, but it is important to verify that they do not contain anything that can cause allergic reactions.

Using a trowel or spatula, apply the honey to the desired area; when it dries, remove it with a blanket to the side opposite to the hair growth.

As it is your first time, Rebecana recommends that your hair be long enough to make waxing easier. They say that “the first time hurts a little more than subsequent times” and add that this method leaves the skin softer.

  • Thread

This procedure, like the previous ones, requires qualified personnel to perform it. It consists of removing hair with cotton threads; however, if it is done incorrectly, it is likely to remove part of the hair and not the whole thing, as it should.

Threading works similarly to tweezing, but is faster and less painful; the area most likely to feel some sensation is the ends of the mustache.

This method is not as painful as the honey and wax methods, which is why Lucía Pérez recommends it for people with sensitive skin to avoid or reduce the likelihood of irritation or the appearance of small rashes.

In the case of ingrown hair, it is recommended to exfoliate, as in the previous cases, to make hair removal easier.

  • Razor

This is perhaps the most practical and accessible technique, even the most used. However, often, due to time constraints, skincare and other measures that improve the result are not taken into account.

One of the recommendations is to exfoliate the area the day before, as this will remove dead cells and remove the hairs that are usually more hidden. In addition, it is important to shower beforehand, to finish removing residue from the skin.

When shaving, it is also recommended to use products such as gel or foam that make it easier for the razor or machine to slide over the skin. If you use soap, make sure it does not dry out the skin.

Although it is the most accessible method, shaving also requires care. (Photo by Prensa Libre: Pixabay)

Something that might help with the slippage is the use of razors that already have a strip of moisturizing gel built in. When shaving, do not apply pressure, as this could cut you and cause a wound.

After removing the hair, make sure to remove all the product from your skin and dry the area. Finally, apply moisturizing products that do not contain alcohol, to avoid any irritation.

The disadvantage is that the hair grows back faster and thicker, and can even cause itching.

Take care of your skin

No matter which method you use, it is advisable to know your skin type, whether it is sensitive or if you suffer from irritation when applying certain products. In addition, you should also take into account the type of hair growth, so you can take appropriate measures in case you have ingrown hairs.

After waxing, be sure to apply products containing aloe vera or chamomile, as this will help relieve irritation caused by honey, wax, or thread. Moisturize your skin and make sure that the products do not contain alcohol, to avoid irritation or rashes. Protect your skin from sun exposure by applying sunscreen every day.
