Many people who diligently go to the gym or exercise regularly face the same frustration: the number on the scale barely budges. The paradox of exercising without achieving weight loss has been studied by science for years, and today, some answers help us understand this phenomenon.

Mexico’s Ministry of Well-being reminds us that physical exercise is much more than a way to shape our figure. It involves any bodily movement driven by skeletal muscles that requires energy expenditure, with proven benefits for the body and mind. 

Among its main benefits is the prevention of overweight and obesity, conditions that increase the risk of chronic diseases in adults, according to the U.S. National Institutes of Health.

However, the equation isn’t always so simple. Metabolism, defined by the Spanish Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics as the set of chemical reactions that convert nutrients into energy, plays a central role in body weight control. And this is precisely where the big question arises: why do some people exercise consistently but fail to reduce their body fat?

Evolutionary anthropologist Herman Pontzer, a specialist in bioenergetics and human evolution, has spent years studying this contradiction. His research concludes that, although exercise significantly improves health, it rarely leads to significant weight loss on its own.

The explanation lies in the body’s ability to adapt. “If you expend more energy during exercise, your body finds ways to expend less on other things,” Pontzer points out. In other words, the metabolism adjusts its function to balance total energy expenditure.

This means that, over time, calorie burning stabilizes and weight loss slows. Therefore, specialists insist that the key lies not only in training, but in making a comprehensive lifestyle change, accompanied by professional nutrition and health advice.

Thus, science makes it clear that exercise is essential for maintaining health, but losing weight also requires a sustained strategy that combines diet, habits, and medical support.
