CAUTION: Reasons Why You Should Not Heat Water Or Milk In The Microwave

Heating water or milk in the microwave may seem like a harmless, everyday practice, but doing so without precaution can pose health risks due to the sudden boiling phenomenon.

Using a microwave to heat liquids like water or milk is a common practice in millions of homes. However, this action carries little-known but potentially dangerous risks , according to food safety experts.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advises against heating liquids for extended periods in microwave ovens because this process can trigger a phenomenon known as boil-over or eruptive boiling.

In these cases, the liquid can reach temperatures exceeding 100°C without forming bubbles, which increases the possibility of burns when shaken or when it comes into contact with an object.

This behavior occurs because microwaves heat unevenly, preventing liquids from bubbling as they would in a traditional pot or kettle.

Since the liquid shows no visible signs of boiling, it may appear safe to the naked eye, but the slightest movement could cause it to boil over and splatter violently, causing serious burns.

Despite these risks, heating water or milk in a microwave can be done more safely if certain precautions are taken. Experts recommend placing a solid object in the container, such as a tea bag or wooden spoon, to reduce the possibility of sudden boiling. Sugar can also be added to the water before heating, which helps distribute the heat energy.

It’s essential to use microwave-safe containers, such as those made of glass, ceramic, or heat-resistant plastic. It’s also recommended not to fill the container more than two-thirds full, and once heating is complete, stir the liquid gently to distribute the temperature evenly.

Another useful measure is to cover the container with a microwave-safe lid or a napkin to prevent splashing. These actions, although simple, can prevent common household accidents related to improper use of this appliance.
